How long does it take my credit report to update after paying off debt?

Once you pay a debt in full, settle a debt, or pay off a judgment, how long do you have to wait for your credit report to update to reflect that payment?

I still find it funny how quick your credit can be destroyed compared to you paying off debt and waiting for it to go back up or stop going down.

Hi Michael. Once a settlement has been paid, what exactly is the credit report supposed to show if a) the account is reported as a negative with the original creditor or b) the account is reported under collections with a third party collection agency?

Hi Michael, a bit off topic, but could be helpful to others. I want to settle my credit card debts. The biggest is with CIBC Visa for $10,000. I have been not been able to find any tips on whether to start negotiating with CIBC just before charge off (I am at day 70 right now), or whether they negotiate, or if they have a policy of not negotiating and going through collections. This a Canadian bank and card–hoping you can help.

For those consumers who have been duped by the section 609 myths that are out their and actually realized that valid, legitimate debts are going to have to be resolved (settled or paid in full) this information is right on time. Great topic!
